FAQs
What growing practices does the farm use?
Being a part of our CSA is to value sustainable farming and supporting practices which prioritize not only your health and well-being but also the health of our soils. In short healthy soil= healthy crops. We are no-dig, Organic, human scale farming. So yup, that also means no tractor, no mechanised machinery that compacts of ploughs! All our veg is grown in permanent raised beds. By not digging we allow the natural, biological processes within our soils to develop undisturbed. Maintaining a succession of diverse, seasonal crops in our beds keeps nutrient balances in check and soil microbes fed. Regular applications of compost mulch-replicates the natural ‘food’ of leaf fall and decay that feeds the soil organisms of the forest floor. By nurturing organic, chemical free, no dig growing spaces in this way, we’re able to provide you with healthy, nutrient rich veggies, whilst bringing our soils here back to life.
Are you certified Organic?
Yes! We achieved full Organic certification with the Soil Association in November 2024. So, we don’t use any nasty chemicals here. Instead, we are working hard to encourage lots of beneficial ally insects, as natural predators for a more integrated approach to pest management. We believe that healthy soil is key to growing healthy vegetables. Building rich, living soil is the foundation for creating and expanding our growing spaces.
What’s in a share?
Our CSA runs for 40 weeks. Our first boxes of this season will be heading out in the first week of June 2025, just as the UK’s hungry gap draws to a close. And they will continue every week there after until the last week of February 2026-as we enter back into that hungry gap period. Your box will maintain a minimum of 8 different seasonal items each and every week and these will change as we move through the seasons. Veg will be a mix of staple family favourites as well as the occasional item less commonly brough from our supermarkets.
What if there is something I don’t like or don’t want in my box?
We pack all our boxes with the same contents of vegetables that are ripe and ready for harvest that week. However, when we deliver (or you come to our collection point) we will always have our ‘swap box’ to hand. So don’t worry if you love Green Beans but can’t stand Beetroot?! You’ll always be able to swap out that item you know your kids won’t eat…and exchange it for something else you love!
What if I’m away or go on holiday and can’t receive my box?
Holidays are to be enjoyed without worrying about a box of veggies sitting untouched on your doorstep! Our platform makes it really easy to pause your box for that time. Simply go onto the Dashboard > Add Pause. Please make sure you let us know the week before if you are planning to be away and we’ll be happy to pack you a bumper box when you return to make up for the veggies you missed. Alternatively, choose to donate your box to a neighbour or whoever has agreed to feed the cat whilst you’re gone!
Do I need to commit to a whole season?
Community Supported Agriculture CSA model is special because it’s a direct relationship between your local farm and you! You’re signing up to partner with me… I promise to deliver you a share of our harvest for the whole year and you in return you’re offering a reliable source of income throughout the season. However, of course, we understand that circumstances do sometimes change. So, if you do need to leave, we would just request that you provide us with one month’s notice so that we can find another family to take over your share.
How do I pay?
Paying for your veggie boxes quick and easy. You can opt to pay for the whole season up front (your pledge at the start of the year offers our little farm great support with all costs incurred when buying organic seed and the best peat free compost at a time of year when we otherwise have little income) or of course you can pay month by month. Organic eggs fresh from our hens or posies from the cut flower garden can be easily added. Click here to join now.
What’s your delivery schedule?
We grow veg for our hyper local community. We can deliver or arrange for you to pick up your box (from a local collection point) if you live within any of the farms surrounding postal codes) BA22, BA21, BA20, BA10, BA7, as well TA11 and DT9. Please see our delivery map under the ‘Buy our produce’ tab. Depending upon your location your boxes will be ready on either Tuesdays or Fridays.
Do you grow everything yourself?
Yes, we endeavour to grow everything here with our own fair hands. However, Off-Grid Organics is ‘micro-scale farming’ and we don’t use any mechanised farm tools…yup, that’s right, no tractor here! We do everything by hand. Its much gentler to the land, doesn’t compact the soil and without such disturbance preserves the biological life forms within our soil. However, this does mean that we simply don’t have the time required to produce absolutely everything. Our main crop potatoes are sourced from another Organic certified Somerset farm as well as a portion of the winter onions that we don’t have space for. Although all early varieties (and your Christmas roasties) we grow ourselves and these we can harvest before our beds become packed full of summer crops. It’s a giant game of Tetris!
Why don’t you deliver all year round?
Well, this one all comes down to the UK’s latitude! The UK’s hungry gap typically considered March-May after the winter crops have ended but before the new season’s plantings are ready to harvest is the hardest time of year for growers. Particularly true of small-scale farms like myself who have limited capacity for winter storage. This is when those larger veg box providers will be buying in lots (and often from partners in warmer parts of Europe) to substitute their own harvest. In short at present, we’d rather provide you with a bountiful, varied shares grown right here through nine months of the year with your understanding of how we work with the seasons and within our small-scale capacities.
During those months we do still grow but in smaller volumes and winter salads etc that we have available you can buy at one of our local farm shop who stock our produce. See below.
How will we stay in touch?
Every week we’ll email members a brief note with ‘what’s in this weeks box’ which may include any storage or preparation tips for any less familiar veg in that box. We’ll also include a weekly seasonal recipe to tantalise your culinary senses. In addition, we send out a short ‘news from the farm’ which is sent out four times a year, seasonally. This will include invitations to any on-farm events, supper clubs, open days, volunteer opportunities etc as well keeping you up to date with how your crops are faring and all the joys and challenges of small-scale agriculture.
You are also welcome to contact me anytime, if you’ve got and questions, concerns or simply feel like telling us how much you’re enjoying our veg!
